Not sure if anyone is reading this but joe did mess up one small part of the trade for our goalie. He should have made the trade then waited and traded Brooks Orpik back to Washington and only kept maybe half the salary. Instead with the buyout we keep more of the cost.

I doubt GMBM would do that when other teams would take his whole contract out right.

Odd, they had ample cap space to just let it run its course and use him as a 7/8 dman. Now they have dead cap space next year.

This move makes little sense to me. It is cheaper to send him to the minors and let his contract run out than buying him out. Avs are not desperate for cap space either. I think they save something like an extra 500k by buying him out rather than demoting. To me it isnt really worth it.

Its not worth playing Orpik over giving a prospect NHL ice time.

But having him doesnt block anyone. He can literally just be a healthy scratch in the minors.

So we should expect the Matt Hunwick buyout when, exactly?

Be careful they may throw Dale Weise at you...

That's about all that Dale is good for anymore

Can't retain salary and trade a player back to a team he was on for 2 seasons.

I don’t get this. Oil basically said same about Gryba. Bought out even though burying him would have cost 0 on the cap.

These guys make enough cash. No need to give them charity.

I think he means courtesy in regards to letting them find a place where they will play rather then just sitting there collecting a paycheck. Im sure Orpik would rather play then sit there and collect the last year of pay.

So he can play in the AHL if he wants to play so bad.

and the team can do even better... most owners(minus Boston and Ottawa for sure) would rather carry a good reputation than a bad one even if it means losing a couple mil. If they're tight to the cap well then its a different situation to analyze.

They were saying yesterday on Sportsnet that now that he is bought out. The rumor is that he is going back to Washington for one year and then talking about retiring and getting into defensive coaching... Kind of interesting

I believe you are thinking of the rule for the compliance buyouts. It was said when the teams got 2 freebies they put in that rule to stop teams from trading overpaid players to other teams to buy them out because they didnt have any bad contracts to use them on. I dont believe such a rule exists for regular buyouts.

It's kind of Cap circumvention but that's really kind of a grey area
